Land Use, Land Cover Change and Sustainable Intensification of Agriculture and Livestock in the Amazon and the Atlantic Forest in Brazil

The Amazon and the Atlantic Forest are Brazilian biomes that suffered an intense land use cover change, marked by loss of native forest expansion agriculture livestock. This article aims to analyze change history propose a sustainable alternative for livestock as opportunity rural development in these biomes. statistics platform from Annual Mapping Project Land Use Cover Brazil (MapBiomas) were used annual historical series 1985 2020. analysis changes indicates was reduced 44.53 million hectares (Mha), while pasture, planted increased 38.10, 6.06 0.26 Mha, respectively, over 35 years (1985 2020). In Forest, same period, pasture 0.99 11.53 expanded 8.06 Mha 2.99 Mha. Sustainable strategies, such Integration Crop-Livestock-Forest (ICLF), can support increase agricultural production recovering preserving environment. Policies programs should consider regional particularities barriers more significant adoption this strategy.
